2007 Graduate – Stephanie Smith

Stephanie SmithMcGuire AFB was opened as Rudd Field in 1937, as a single dirt-strip field that served a support role to adjacent Fort Dix. The field was expanded during World War II and was reassigned to the Air Force in 1949.

The Air Force named the base after Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr., the second leading air ace in World War II, who was killed in action in January 1945. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.[1]

One of the critical jobs McGuire Air Force Base accomplishes is hosting the flying needs of next-door neighbor Fort Dix Army installation. For years, Fort Dix has been a gateway for army personnel shipping out to overseas locations. Air Force and civilian-contracted aircraft use McGuire’s two runways to facilitate this mission. Many hundreds of thousands of Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps personnel have left the United States for overseas locations from McGuire Air Force Base.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,478 people, 1,498 households, and 1,466 families residing in the base of which 79.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 89.0% were married couples living together. Fitting nicely into this demographic is our graduate of the month for November, Mrs. Stephanie Smith.

Stephanie resides on the base with her husband and three children. Stephanie did not finish high school as a teenager. For a myriad of reasons that seemed like a good idea at the time, she dropped out after the 11th grade. She has regretted that decision ever since. That is until now. Stephanie is now a full fledged high school graduate. She earned that right by completing the requirements for her diploma.

Stephanie is a very conscientious mother. She wanted to be the role model for her kids. It’s tough enough to raise kids and keep them in school. You have to set the example. Stephanie now her sights set on becoming a teacher. She will be starting that path very soon with a college near McGuire AFB.

Stephanie has a wonderful husband that supported her along with her parents’ encouragement. McGuire AFB tells us that she proved a lot of people wrong by earning her diploma. “They didn’t think I could do it with three kids to care for too.” Well McGuire AFB did do it and is continuing on.

Citizens’ High School is grateful that Stephanie chose us and we are proud she earned her diploma. Stephanie is our Graduate of the Month for November 2007.
