Citizens’ High School employs proven, traditional educational methods to teach our students. They earn an accredited high school diploma at home, while studying at their own pace using our high-quality textbooks and learning materials.
Since 1984, Citizens’ has been nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. We are also registered as a private high school by the State of Florida. For more details on our accreditation and state registration, please click here.
Our courses are built around the latest editions of public-school-accepted textbooks from major educational publishers. These have been incorporated into independent courses through the development of well-designed, easy-to-follow study guides that act as "teachers at home.”
Citizens’ Academic Advisors help guide students to set effective goals that reflect their interests and abilities. They then assist each student with decisions on the next course of study and the most efficient way to utilize our study guides and educational materials. Each student studies at his or her own pace. Within each course, self-check exercises allow the student to check what has been learned. And while we don’t require any online classes or activities, we highly encourage students to use the Internet to conduct research and enrich their studies through online educational resources.
The study guides also include the course examinations that are completed on the open book principle. When a student feels ready, he or she takes an examination for a unit of lessons completed and mails it to CHS. Student work and tests are graded by hand and returned quickly.
All our teachers are state-certified and experienced with serving distance education students. The student may fax, e-mail or write for extra help when needed, or the student may call the school at any time. For more details on How CHS Works, click here.
Through all their studies, we require our students to maintain academic integrity in their work. At Citizens’ High School we have a zero-tolerance policy that forbids cheating or knowingly providing false or misleading information. For more on this, click here.
These traditional academic methods have proven successful for millions of distance-education students for more than 100 years, so we know it is effective. On the other hand, we don’t believe in:
- Forcing students to sit through boring, online lectures
- Assigning extensive memorization or busy work
- “Teaching to a test” while disregarding other important learning objectives, and
- Requiring students to sit for government-approved, standardized exams
If you have any questions about our methods, please call an admissions representative for answers at 800-736-4723. We look forward to speaking with you about your educational goals.
